Community, Investment, and Opportunity Strategic Plan (CIO Plan)
The CIO Plan will bring new spaces for teaching and learning and support for students to our beautiful Edison campus. It will also make our campus a destination for residents of Middlesex County for education, workforce development, and recreation. The CIO Plan is a partnership between Middlesex County, Middlesex College, Middlesex County Magnet Schools, Middlesex County Improvement Authority, and the State of New Jersey; with Federal, State, and County funds being leveraged to pay for the overall project. It is the result of a shared vision between Middlesex College and Middlesex County based on Middlesex County’s Destination 2040 Strategic Plan and the College’s nearly-completed Master Facilities Plan for 2024-2034. These two plans identified unique opportunities to collaborate on developing infrastructure on our Edison campus that will serve the College and the Middlesex County community.
4/7: Effective April 7, the College Gymnasium will be closed for renovations.
The renovation project will include the removal and replacement of the bleachers and the gym floor, both of which have reached the end of their useful life, along with other area improvements.
The project will commence with the removal of the bleachers, and is expected to be completed in time for the fall semester. The Gymnasium area will be sealed off, allowing for the remainder of the Physical Education Center to be used during the renovations.
4/2: The North Hall parking lot, which surrounds the building, will be closed starting April 2.
In its place, a temporary gravel lot and new handicap parking spaces have been added in front of North Hall. Please use these new parking areas or other available spots on campus beginning April 2.
A permanent parking lot will be built on the side of North Hall, with construction expected to be completed in approximately 10 weeks.
2/24: In the coming weeks, additional work will begin, including the installation of construction fencing to secure the area between West Hall and the Bookstore for the construction of a second Middlesex County Magnet School.
This new Magnet School will offer programs for high school students from across Middlesex County that focus on emerging high-skill, high-pay fields including: Biotechnology and Plant Science; Information, Communications, and Cybertechnology; and Sustainable Energy Technology. Many of the programs of study that will be offered at the new Magnet School align with degree programs that the College offers so that graduates of the new Magnet School will be encouraged to pursue an associate degree at Middlesex College.
The Magnet School will incorporate the building currently occupied by the Bookstore and will extend back into the wooded area behind West Hall.
The Bookstore will be relocated within the next several months to College Center. Facilities and Purchasing are coordinating with Barnes & Noble and our Bookstore operator to ensure the transition is made with minimal disruption to Bookstore operations.
In preparation for construction of the new Magnet School, the land behind the Bookstore building will be cleared. Middlesex County is committed to reforesting parts of our Edison campus and Thomas Edison Park after all construction has been completed and plans to plant more than 1,350 new trees in accordance with guidelines established by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
2/18: A multiple restroom renovation will begin in March 2025 in Johnson Learning Center and Edison and Raritan Halls.
Johnson Learning Center rooms 161, 162, 163, 164, 165, 256, 257, 259, 260.
Edison Hall rooms 146, 147, 148, 149, 155, 156, 158.
Raritan Hall rooms 120, 121, 219, 221, 222.
The work will be done during regular hours, from 8 a.m. 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The construction will be phased and have a minimal impact on faculty, staff, or students. The above-listed rooms will not be accessible during the construction period.
No one but the contractor’s employees and Middlesex College maintenance personnel will be allowed in these areas. During construction, the work areas will be separated and temporarily protected. Students, faculty, and occupants will continue to have access to corridors, the elevator, restrooms, and the lobby area.
1/28: The following traffic and parking changes will go into effect on 1/31:
Lot 10 will be closed.
The northern section of Lot 11 will be closed.
Approximately 25 parking spaces will remain available in Lot 11 for faculty and staff in the southern section of the lot closest to Billy Johnson Hall.
An additional 60 parking spaces for faculty and staff have been added to Lot 1B in front of Crabiel Hall as a result of a permanent expansion of that lot. The entrance to Lot 1B is now located on Parkside Drive between West and Crabiel Halls.
A portion of Deiner Drive and Hof Road will be closed.
Lot 14 (between Billy Johnson and Edison Halls) will remain open for handicap parking. Through traffic on Deiner Drive is closed, but access to the driveway leading to the back of Edison Hall will remain open.
The Edison Academy Magnet School large bus area will move to the west side of Crabiel Hall nearest to Mill Road, with buses exiting the campus via Lot 1.
12/18–12/21: Traffic and Parking Changes During Gas Line Work
Please be advised that Elizabethtown Gas will be on campus this week to install a new gas line. From Wednesday, December 18 through Saturday, December 21, the following traffic and parking changes will be in effect:
Alumni Drive between College Drive East and Chambers Drive will be operating as one lane towards Chambers Drive with all opposite traffic routed on to Hof Road.
Residence Drive will be closed to traffic.
The North and East Hall parking lots will be closed.
12/9: Reconfiguration and repair work will begin in part of Lot 1 on December 12 and will end on December 14, weather permitting.
11/25: Please be advised that beginning December 9, three handicap parking spaces in Lot 17 behind the Instructional Resource Center will be unavailable due to the replacement of the JLC roof. Nine remaining handicap spaces will be available in this lot. This work will be completed from December 9 through the first week of January, depending on weather conditions, and will not impact any other operations. Three additional handicap spaces have been added to Lot 8 at the East Hall, located across the street from Lot 17.
9/16: A temporary construction fence will be installed between the Library and Center 1 and Center 2 starting Wednesday, September 18, 2024. The fence will remain until the roof is 100% complete. The walkway behind Center 1 and Center 2 will be closed temporarily during the renovation. During construction, active construction areas will be cordoned off with a temporary construction fence and only contractor employees and Middlesex College maintenance personnel will be allowed in the construction areas.
There will be temporary road closures for equipment and material delivery on Alumni Drive and, occasionally, when removing roof debris off site. Fencing will be stored in the storage area on the walkway near Raritan Hall; half of the walkway will remain open.
All work will be performed in accordance with appropriate codes, and all necessary safety measures will be employed. Faculty and staff should contact Vince Builla or Alberto Alayόn in Facilities Management with any questions about construction.
8/21: Beginning September 9, 2024, the Library will be closed for a roof replacement. The library is projected to reopen on December 15. Librarians and staff are temporarily relocating to the Instructional Resource Center (IRC 241). Additional information can be found at the library’s website.
5/14 — Road Closure: Alumni Drive between North Hall and Chambers Drive starting at 9 a.m. for a CIO Plan milestone event.
5/6: Middlesex County Officials will join the Middlesex College Community on campus on May 14, 2024 to announce progress of the first phase of the CIO Plan: the completion of the design of several key components including the Multipurpose Community Venue, the Student Center, and a new Middlesex County Magnet School.
10/30: CME Associates, the engineering consultant firm engaged by the County for the CIO project, conducted a due-diligence soil investigation on the northern-most part of campus– the large section of open space adjacent to Woodbridge Avenue. This due-diligence soil investigation found no groundwater contamination but did identify compounds in the soil in concentrations that exceed New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) standards, likely related to our campus’ history as an arsenal in the early 1900s and the lawn treatment practices in place at the time when that area of our campus served as a golf course. The County is conducting an additional investigation and has retained a licensed site remediation professional to oversee that investigation and any remediation. In the coming days, NJDEP notification signage will be placed in the impacted area until the investigation begins later this fall as is required by the NJDEP. The additional testing and any remediation should have little to no impact on College operations.
10/13: At this morning’s Board meeting, the Board approved a lease with Middlesex County Magnet Schools for the land on which to construct the new Magnet School and the use of the Bookstore building. Construction on the new Magnet School is expected to begin sometime in 2024. The College bookstore (currently operated by Barnes & Noble) will be relocated, with more information to be shared in advance.
10/14: Middlesex College Board of Trustees and President Mark McCormick announce Middlesex College’s Community, Innovation, and Opportunity (CIO) Strategic Plan to the campus community at the November meeting of the Board of Trustees. The investment from the County will bring new facilities to the Middlesex College campus including a new student center, an Academic and Workforce Center, a new Middlesex County Magnet School, and an open-air, multipurpose community venue.
