The College celebrated the launch of Volume 8 of the Faculty and Staff Creative and Scholarly Works Bibliography, highlighting works by 23 authors in the community.
Authors with Middlesex College credentials and classrooms celebrated the launch of Volume 8 of the Faculty and Staff Creative and Scholarly Works Bibliography with a reception at the campus library.
Volume 8 highlights works by 23 faculty and staff members representing nine College departments.
“It’s important for us to do this project and have this bibliography annually so we can highlight the work faculty and staff members are doing outside of the classroom,” said Middlesex College Library Director Marilyn Ochoa. “Because there is such depth to what a person is.”
Included in the bibliography is first-time author John Michael Saimbert, a professor in the History and Social Sciences Department and the Business and Computer Science Department. Saimbert’s book, Business & Political Science, discusses current privacy and ethical issues that arise when politics, technology, and business interests intersect.
“I am proud because it comes full circle with what I am able to give back,” Saimbert said. “To the different levels of students I have had from an educational standpoint, dedicating it to my family for the perseverance that they have given me, and the fortitude to even think about doing something as innovative as this.”
Supply chain and business professor Stuart Rosenberg’s fourth and latest book is titled Global Healthcare and the Supply Chain: Revolutionizing Healthcare, One Patient at a Time.
“I like this one the best,” Rosenberg said, smiling. “I think after four books, you get the process down, but it’s still a process.”
Rosenberg shares that the goal of his book was to highlight inefficiencies in the international supply chain and showcase the dangers for when it breaks.
“People don’t realize this, but almost all of our medical supplies and drugs are not made in the United States,” said Rosenberg. “So if something happens, like COVID or the Cold War, we have a big problem on our hands. And the people that suffer in the end are the patients.”
Both Saimbert and Rosenberg plan to use their works as supplemental educational resources next semester.
Middlesex College librarian Sara Imranyi said that books by campus professors draw attention.
“Students ask for them,” said Imranyi, “especially if they’re in one of their classes.”
Imranyi is the author of Building Language Friendly Libraries: Tailoring Instruction and Programs for ESL Populations and co-author of Beyond the Stacks: Pop-up Libraries as Outreach and Instruction.
Ochoa said there are plans to create shelf space dedicated to Middlesex College authors in the library where all books referenced will be displayed. The College also has resources available to faculty interested in writing their own book.
“I think it’s part of what it is to be a faculty or staff member,” said Ochoa. “Often, we’re in the classroom doing that work, but there is so much more to an individual. To be able to share and make visible the things they are passionate about outside of the classroom is extremely important.”
