Police Blotter

The Middlesex College Police Department’s crime log is public information made available in compliance with the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. (Also known as the “Clery Act.”)

This crime log represents a synopsis of reportable events. The hundreds of routine calls for service, general assistance and student conduct violations, which do not result in police reports, are omitted in this log.

There are typically six areas covered in the blotter i.e. (Nature/Classification, Date reported, time, General location, Brief description and disposition). Incidents are in chronological order. The most recent entry is at the bottom of the list.

According to Federal Law, an institution may withhold any of the required fields of entry, i.e. the nature, date, time, location and/or disposition, if any of the following conditions apply:

1. The disclosure is prohibited by law
2. If the disclosure would jeopardize the confidentiality of the victim.
3. If the disclosure would jeopardize an on-going criminal investigation or safety of an individual.
4. If the disclosure would cause a suspect to flee or evade detection.
5. If disclosure would result in the destruction of evidence.

Police Blotter Disposition Definitions 

(effective date October 1, 2005)

The following is an explanation of the terminology used to complete the disposition section of the log.

• Open case – The case is currently being investigated by MCPD
• Unfounded – The case is determined through investigation to be false or baseless. Nooffense occurred nor was attempted.
• Referred to Department (RTD) – The case is referred to the appropriate supervisory employee or to the Middlesex College Human Resource Service Department. These departments review the case and determine if disciplinary action will be initiated.
• Referred to Code of Student Conduct (CSC) – The case has been forwarded to the office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Services, who is responsible for reviewing the case and for determining whether or not the student(s) involved will be charged with a violation(s) of the Student Code of Conduct.
• Closed – A – The subject(s) has been arrested, served a complaint or issued a *trespass warning.
• Closed – B – The case has no solvability; no suspects or witnesses.
• Closed – C – Case closed; no further action needed.
• Closed – D – Re-classified. The original incident report classification has been changed to accurately reflect the appropriate classification, based on the results of the investigation.

*The suspect(s) has been issued a Trespass Notice, which restricts the subject(s) from entering or accessing any college property. A violation of this notice may result in that person’s arrest for Trespassing.
