Parking Regulations

It should be understood that parking is a privilege, not a right. The acceptance of parking privileges and the presence of any vehicle on campus represents an agreement by the motorist, that Middlesex College is in no way liable for personal injury, damage, or lost of part, or contents of, the vehicle.

Parking Areas

All full-time and part-time students should park in the white-lined areas. Student parking is designated in the following areas only: parking lots 1, 1A, 2, 4, 6 and 6A.

• Students: white-striped stalls
• Faculty and Staff: green-striped stalls
• Visitors: yellow-striped stalls
• Disabled Persons: blue-striped stalls

Note: All vehicles parked illegally in disabled parking areas, in emergency areas, and on the roadside are subject to towing at owner’s expense. Failure to pay traffic fines for repeated offense will result in towing at the owner’s expense.

Handicapped Parking on Middlesex College Property

Use of handicapped parking spaces requires the proper display of a valid, state issued permit. Handicapped license plate or placards (with identification card) are required. Parking in Handicap parking stalls requires proper identification at all times.

Parking in handicapped spaces for “just a minute” is 60 seconds too long!

Never park in a space reserved for people with disabilities unless you have a permit, placard or handicapped parking plates. It’s the courteous thing to do — and it’s the law.

Remember: Do not park in striped access aisles next to spaces reserved for people with disabilities even if you have a permit or plates. Access aisles provide room for wheelchair users to transfer safely to and from their vehicles.

New Jersey Handicapped Parking Laws

On November 29, 1989, Governor Thomas Kean signed two handicapped parking laws. New Jersey’s handicapped parking laws have sought to alleviate the parking problems that have plagued individuals with disabilities. Listed below are some of the significant provisions of these laws:

• Enables state, county and municipal law enforcement officers or parking enforcement officers to enforce the parking restriction on appropriately marked handicapped parking spaces on both public and private property.
• Mandates a $250.00 fine for the first offense of parking a motor vehicle in a restricted handicapped parking space without a special identification card and, for subsequent offenses, a fine of at least $250.00 and up to 90 days of community service.
• Authorizes eligible individuals with disabilities to request a law enforcement officer to arrange for the removal of a motor vehicle that is parked unlawfully in a handicapped parking space or zone.

The Application Process

If you attend or work for Middlesex College and are physically disabled and do not already have handicapped privileges in New Jersey, you may obtain a handicapped parking placard by contacting Motor Vehicles Services.

The Middlesex College Police Department wants to emphasize that the handicapped parking laws in the state of New Jersey are being enforced on both public and private property. So the next time you think of parking in a handicapped space to which you are not entitled, even if it’s “just for a minute” — don’t! Handicapped parking spaces are NOT drop off and pick up areas. No exceptions!

Towing of Vehicles

Vehicles are subject to towing at the owner’s expense for any violation of college traffic and parking or registration rules.

Towing is provided by private company contracted by the college. Cost of towing and storage is paid directly to the tow company. The college does not benefit monetarily from the towing of vehicle.

Emergency Procedures

In case of motor vehicle accident, lost by theft, vehicle breakdown, or any injury, call College Police Headquarters at 732.906.2500 or use any red emergency phone located throughout the campus.

All accidents and thefts, no matter how minor, must be reported to the College police.

Rules and Regulations

Rules and Regulations are in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Vehicles in violation of any of the following rules are subject to ticketing and towing at the owner’s expense. Please read all signs at lot entrances.

Registration and/or display of a valid Middlesex College parking decal or permit is required at all times for all vehicles parked in the staff lots within the jurisdictional areas of Middlesex College.

Parking on College property is permitted for College business only.

All vehicles must park as assigned. Marked stalls are provided in all lots. All vehicles must be parked entirely within a marked stall. Absence of marked stall indicates “No Parking”.

Availability of specific stalls or space in specific lots, or any space availability, is not guaranteed with a parking decal.

Non availability of space in specific stalls or lots does not excuse illegal or improper parking. Legal alternatives should be sought in other lots.

Other illegally parked, unticketed vehicles do not excuse illegal parking and do not indicate that parking rules are not in effect.

Restrictions in gate controlled lots are in effect at all times, even when gate arms are in the “up” position.

Responsibility for all Middlesex College parking violations issued to a vehicle are assumed by vehicle registrant, regardless of the driver or owner.

Violations issued to a vehicle, which is not registered with the Traffic Office, are the responsibility of the vehicle owner registered with the state’s Motor Vehicle Commission. Penalties may be passed onto the student associated with the vehicle if the ticket(s) are not paid promptly.

State registration laws must be abided by while parked on College property. Vehicles without valid state license plates or inspection stickers will be towed by the College police.

Vehicles with excessive unpaid tickets are subject to towing, without notice, at the owner’s expense. Campus parking privileges may also be revoked.

Unpaid parking tickets will result in holds placed on records, transcripts, grades, and/or diplomas. Academic registration may also be denied.

Signs and markings are provided in the interest of parking control and safety of lives and must be obeyed. Removal or damage of any signs is illegal. Perpetrators are subject to arrest and prosecution.

Lot restrictions are posted at every parking lot entrance. Registrants are expected to familiarize themselves with the information provided on these signs. Missing signs do not preempt parking regulations.

Disabled vehicles must be reported to the college police. Disabled vehicles should not obstruct traffic flow or endanger safety. The vehicle must be removed as soon as possible – not longer than 24 hours after the vehicle became disabled. Permission may be obtained from College police headquarters to leave the vehicle for longer periods of time if needed. Disabled vehicles, which are not reported or not re-reported, will be towed.

Storage of vehicles on College property is prohibited.

Use of counterfeit or altered parking permits or decals is prohibited.

Use of permits or decals reported stolen is prohibited, even if used by the person to whom the permit was originally issued.

Allowing another person to use your permit for the expressed or non – expressed intention of providing parking for which they are not entitled, constitutes fraudulent use of the decal or permit and will result in ticketing/towing and possible College sanctions.

Temporary closure of parking areas or roadways is a right of the College reserved for reasons of repair or safety. Vehicles parked in areas that have been closed by barricades, signs, or notification are subject to towing at the owner’s expense.

Employees needing to bring rented or borrowed vehicles on campus for a day, due to service or repairs on their registered vehicle must obtain a temporary parking permit for the vehicle.

Notes of explanation left on vehicles to excuse illegal parking, will not be honored.
