Fire Science Technology

The program provides in-depth study and critical thinking of fire suppression topics. At the same time it establishes a solid foundation for the student to achieve increased levels of responsibility and leadership in the fire service of tomorrow.

Graduates of the program will be able to:

• Identify minimum qualifications for entry level skills for firefighter hiring and rescue company operations in the fire service.
• Analyze, appraise, and evaluate fire and emergency incidents and identify components of emergency management and firefighter safety.
• Comprehend laws, regulations, codes, and standards that influence fire department operations, and identify regulatory and advisory organizations that create and mandate them, especially in the areas of fire prevention, building codes and ordinances, and firefighter health and safety.
• Analyze the causes of fire, determine extinguishing agents and methods, differentiate the stages of the fire and fire development, and compare methods of heat transfer.
• Differentiate between fire detection and fire suppression systems.
• Identify and describe common types of building construction and conditions associated with structural collapse and firefighter safety.

Prerequisites

Algebra I is a prerequisite for all majors. Algebra I competency may be verified with a passing score on the College’s placement test or completion of the appropriate course. Students must also have a grade of “C” or better in one year of high school laboratory chemistry.
