Colts On an Upswing as Coach Mooney Earns 300th Win

Some coaches don’t track their win numbers, but Middlesex College Baseball Coach CJ Mooney said he knew it was 300. The milestone victory occurred on April 15 in a come-from-behind win over Bergen Community College. The Colts rallied from 7-1 down to win 10-9.  

At the end of the game, he was surprised with a commemorative poster and a celebratory Gatorade shower by his squad. 

“I did not see that coming,” Mooney laughed. “Sometimes you know it’s coming, but that time they got me.” 

The Middlesex College alum and director of K-12 Partnerships just completed his 13th year in the dugout. In the Spring 2026 season, he guided the Colts to a 38-17 record and the Region 19 semifinals before they were eliminated. It was the fifth straight season with 30 or more wins for the program.  

Like most coaches in his position, Mooney gives credit to his players and coaching staff, especially assistant coach Brian Weins. 

“It’s a nice accomplishment, but you have to have talent to make it happen,” Mooney said. “I always say a coach can lose you games, but rarely can a coach win a game for you. My job is to put players into the right position but, at the end of the day, they need to go out there and perform.” 

The coach is thrilled that his next victories will come in a new, state-of-the-art on-campus stadium. 

“I’m already seeing the impact of the new stadium with our recruiting—the stadium sells itself,” said Mooney, a Milltown native who now lives in Flemington. “I know everyone is excited about the games there, but what I am excited about is the extra reps and development we can do with our players. In the past we had to share the gym with our other teams. Now we’ll have our own space to work all season.” 

Mooney humbly shared that his journey to where he is now is thanks in part to the support of his Middlesex College peers. 

“Former athletic director Bob Wisniewski gave me the opportunity to run this program 13 years ago as a 23-year-old kid with zero experience,” Mooney said. “Since then, I’ve been blessed having President McCormick and current athletic director Rocco Constantino believe in me to let us play as many games as we do and travel around. It helps attract more local talent when you’re putting a good product out there. I appreciate all the support.”
