{"id":1362,"date":"2023-04-12T16:08:28","date_gmt":"2023-04-12T20:08:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/middlesexcollege.edu\/academics\/?page_id=1362"},"modified":"2023-04-24T11:51:58","modified_gmt":"2023-04-24T15:51:58","slug":"program-competencies","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/middlesexcollege.edu\/academics\/health-professions\/dental-hygiene\/program-competencies\/","title":{"rendered":"Program Competencies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"bb-primary-1 wp-block-heading\"><strong>Core Competencies (C)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>C.1 Apply a professional code of ethics in all endeavors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C.2 Adhere to state and federal laws, regulations and recommendations in the provision of dental hygiene care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C.3 Promote patient health and wellness using critical thinking and problem solving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C.4 Use evidence-based decision making to evaluate and incorporate emerging treatment modalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C.5 Perform on-going self-assessment for lifelong learning and professional growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C.6 Promote the profession through service activities and affiliations with professional organizations<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C.7 Provide quality assurance mechanisms for health services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C.8 Communicate effectively with individuals and groups from diverse populations<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C.9 Provide accurate, consistent, and complete documentation for assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation of dental hygiene services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C.10 Provide care to all patients using an individualized approach that is humane, empathetic, and caring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"bb-primary-1 wp-block-heading\"><strong>Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (HP)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>HP.1 Promote the values of oral and general health and wellness to the public and organizations within and outside the profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HP.2 Respect the goals, values, beliefs, and preferences of the patient while promoting optimal oral and general health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HP.3 Refer patients who may have a physiologic, psychological, and\/or social problems for a comprehensive evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HP.4 Identify individual and population risk factors and develop strategies that promote health related quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HP.5 Evaluate and utilize methods to ensure the health and safety of the patient and the dental hygienist in the delivery of dental hygiene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"bb-primary-1 wp-block-heading\"><strong>Community Involvement (CM)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>CM.1 Assess the oral health needs of the community and the resources available to facilitate access to care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CM.2 Provide screening, referral, and educational services that allow patients to access the resources of the health care system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CM.3 Provide community oral health services in a variety of settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CM.4 Evaluate the outcomes of community-based programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"bb-primary-1 wp-block-heading\"><strong>Professional Growth and Development (PGD)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>PGD.1 Identify career options within health care, industry, education, and research and evaluate the feasibility of pursuing dental hygiene opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PGD.2 Access professional and community networks to pursue career, educational and professional goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"bb-primary-1 wp-block-heading\"><strong>Patient Care (PC)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>PC.1 Systematically collect, analyze and record data on the general, oral, and psychosocial health status of a variety of patients. (ASSESSMENT)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This skill assessment includes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"a\">\n<li>Select, obtain, and interpret diagnostic information recognizing its advantages and limitations.<\/li>\n<li>Recognize predisposing and etiologic risk factors that require intervention to prevent disease.<\/li>\n<li>Obtain, review, and update a complete medical, family, social, and dental history.<\/li>\n<li>Recognize health conditions and medications that impact overall patient care.<\/li>\n<li>Identify patients at risk for a medical emergency and manage the patient care in a manner that prevents an emergency.<\/li>\n<li>Perform a comprehensive examination using clinical, radiographic, periodontal, dental charting, and other data collection procedures to assess the patient\u2019s needs.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><br>PC.2 Use critical decision-making skills to reach conclusions about the patient\u2019s dental hygiene needs based on all available assessment data. (DIAGNOSIS)<br><br><strong>This skill assessment includes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"a\">\n<li>Determine a dental hygiene diagnosis.<\/li>\n<li>Identify patient needs and significant findings that impact the delivery of dental hygiene services.<\/li>\n<li>Obtain consultations as indicated..<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>PC.3 Collaborate with the patient, and\/or other health professionals, to formulate a comprehensive dental hygiene care plan that is patient-centered and based on current scientific evidence. (PLANNING)<br><br><strong>This skill assessment includes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"a\">\n<li>Prioritize the care plan based on the health status and the actual and potential problems of the individual to facilitate optimal oral health.<\/li>\n<li>Establish a planned sequence of care (educational, clinical, and evaluation) based on the dental hygiene diagnosis; identified oral conditions; potential problems; etiologic and risk factors; and available treatment modalities.<\/li>\n<li>Establish a collaborative relationship with the patient in the planned care to include etiology, prognosis, and treatment alternatives.<\/li>\n<li>Make referrals to other health care professionals.<\/li>\n<li>Obtain the patient\u2019s informed consent based on a thorough case presentation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>PC.4 Provide specialized treatment that includes preventive and therapeutic services designed to achieve and maintain oral health. (IMPLEMENTATION)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This skill assessment includes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"a\">\n<li>Perform dental hygiene interventions to eliminate and\/or control local etiologic factors to prevent and control caries, periodontal disease, and other oral conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Control pain and anxiety during treatment through the use of accepted clinical and behavioral techniques.<\/li>\n<li>Provide life support measures to manage medical emergencies in the patient care environment.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>PC.5 Evaluate the effectiveness of the implemented clinical, preventive, and educational services and modify as needed. (EVALUATION)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This skill assessment includes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"a\">\n<li>Determine the outcomes of dental hygiene interventions using indices, instruments, examination techniques, and patient\/client self-report.<\/li>\n<li>Evaluate the patient\u2019s satisfaction with the oral health care received and the oral health status achieved.<\/li>\n<li>Provide
